Fati’s Story

Apr 22, 2024 | Latest News

Meet Fati, a 40-year-old mother of four, who lives with her family in a rural community in Burkina Faso. Fati and her family depend on their land and the food they can grow to feed themselves.

However, life and farming in Burkina Faso is hard. A staggering 86% of the population depends on agriculture, yet they face the relentless challenges of drought, desertification, and other harsh impacts of climate change. Unpredictable weather and a lack of modern agricultural knowledge make sustainability a constant battle.

And that’s where you come in.

At The Hunger Project, our work focuses on promoting strong systems and capacity so communities grow more resilient in order to withstand and manage crises, such as food insecurity due to climate change.

Fati’s life began to change dramatically after attending workshops in sustainable farming practices with The Hunger Project. Here, she acquired skills in new farming techniques including composting, intercropping and how to make the best use of scarce resources, that would transform her family’s future. “We have also been trained in the manufacture of organic fertilizer,” Fati proudly shares. This training allowed her to use organic fertilizers made from her livestock’s manure, reducing her reliance on costly chemical fertilizers that damage the soil.

Today, Fati’s fields are flourishing, bustling with her family working together during the harvest. She now dreams bigger, “I want to go into the field of small farming animals…I even want to find an employee to take care of it”. With her newfound knowledge and skills, Fati has been able to secure a stable income, ensuring that all four of her children can attend school. She is filled with hope for the future.

Thanks to the relentless efforts of Fati, her community, and the support from investors of The Hunger Project, the community at the Boulkon Epicentre in Burkina Faso has undergone a remarkable transformation. In Fati’s hopeful words, “The future will be better”.

The story of Fati and her community serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of education and support in overcoming adversity.
