A BIG Thank You from all of us at The Hunger Project UK for getting involved in World Hunger Day 2012.
Our fundraising total has already exceeded £150,000 with more donations and further events still to come. In only our second year this is already a 100% increase on the total raised in 2011 for our programme work in Africa, Latin America and South Asia.
Stunning work everyone…and we still have another 5 months of 2012 to contribute even more and plan ahead for the Third Anniversary of World Hunger Day in 2013 and beyond!
The story for 2012 so far….
With preparations going on for many months and our Official Launch on The Jonathan Ross Show in March, we began the 2012 Campaign proper in May when 30 people joined Team Hunger to embark on a mammoth 100km Walk, Jog and Run from London to Brighton in aid of The Hunger Project.
Just two weeks later came the World Hunger Day Weekend. This began with a Fundraising and Thank You Dinner with Dionne at The Dorchester.
The next two incredible days saw over 320 performers, musicians and a huge production, technical team and crew come together to rehearse and build the stage for the main celebration event – Dionne Warwick & Friends at The Royal Albert Hall.
Led by Dionne Warwick – Sir Cliff Richard OBE, Alexandra Burke, Caro Emerald, Jumoké Fashola, Boy George, Tony Hadley, Tony Hatch, Joe McElderry, Katie Melua, Mica Paris, Angela Rippon OBE, London Community Gospel Choir, The World Hunger Day Choir and Southbank Sinfonia, 5,500 people packed out this iconic venue to be entertained, celebrate their own achievements to partner with The Hunger Project and to learn (in many cases perhaps for the first time) a lot more about the issues of hunger and poverty and what can and is being done in partnership with our family in Africa, South Asia and Latin America to end it once and for all.
What an incredible evening that was, with standing ovations left, right and centre, the World Premier of our World Hunger Day Anthem – One World One Song and much positive feedback and a well-earned celebratory gathering afterwards.
All brilliant, but there was still more to come…
A couple of weeks ago Team Hunger Cyclists took part in a 100k Moonlight Cycle, riding through the lashing wind and rain, uphill and down dales between London and Brighton. Huge congratulations and thanks to them.
Also there is still time to sign up for our most picturesque challenge yet (and final World Hunger Day 2012 event) a 50km or 100km walk along the banks of the River Thames at the end of September. Why not join us for the Thames Path Challenge? Learn more
