THP-Volunteers Assist Communities During Flooding in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Flooding August 2011Heavy monsoon rains have burst the banks of several major rivers in Bangladesh
– destroying homes, villages and farm land throughout southern-Bangladesh. Thousands have been displaced or marooned and it is estimated that over 1.5 million are currently feeling the effects of lost resources and water pollution.

Though large-scale relief efforts have been launched by the Disaster Management Bureau, the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management and The World Food Programme, resources are stretched thin and thousands have yet to receive assistance. Animators and leaders with The Hunger Project (THP)-Bangladesh have leapt into action and are lending a hand to those in need in partnership with small-scale, local groups. Here are some of their stories:

  • Kulsuma Akhtar, a THP-trained woman leader, and other animators are working with the local government of Teknaf Municipality in the southern town of Cox’s Bazar to distribute dry foods, water purification tablets, clothes, saline and candles. They have been collecting supplies from local organisations and individuals to pass on to displaced families.
  • Volunteer Trainer and woman leader Chondrika has led animators from South-western Saatkhira district in distributing dry foods, water purification tablets, and saline in a small-scale, local effort among affected peoples.
  • In several regions of the South-western Saatkhira district – Padmapukur Union of Shamnagar Upazilla, Protapnagar Union of Asasuni Upazilla and Krisnanagar Union of Kaliganj – THP-trained animators have distributed dry foods, water purification tablets, sugar and saline. They have collected supplies from local organisations and distributed to over 450 families with the leadership of THP-animators Rabiul Islam and Sahidulla.
